Candice Adea of Ballet Philippines won the coveted Maris Liepa Prize for Outstanding Artistry at the 2011 Boston International Ballet Competition. The prize recipient will be invited to perform in Paris in 2012 along with stars from Bolshoi and Mariinsky Theaters presenting Fokine ballets as part of the Russian season in France. Candice will be performing “Firebird.” The 24 year old is a principal dancer of Ballet Philippines, resident company of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. The Boston International Ballet Competition (BIBC) was founded & directed by Valentina Koslova, and the Liepa Prize was named after Maris Liepa, legendary dancer, choreographer and teacher at the Bolshoi Ballet. The Maris Liepa Fund directed by Liepa’s children Andris & Ilze, was established for the purpose of preserving & celebrating the beauty of classical ballet. In 2010, Candice won the silver medal for the Senior Division at the 2010 USA International Ballet Competition, which is more popularly known as the Jackson competition, as it is held in Jackson, Mississippi. Candice started dancing at the young age of 4. She started dancing under Pamela Ortiz and Josette Salang. Later, she was mentored by Brezhnev Larlar and the CCP Dance School until she entered the portal of the Philippine High School for the Arts, where she honed her craft under the expertise of Nonoy Froilan, Victor Ursabia and Ronilo Jaynario. At age 13, she was a semi-finalist at the 8th Asia Pacific Ballet Competition in Tokyo, Japan. Three years later, she made it to the finals. In 2003, she joined Ballet Philippines and has starred in stage productions like Snow White, Coppelia, Peter Pan’s Neverneverland, the Nutcracker and Amada for which she received the Gawad Buhay Award for Most Outstanding female lead dancer for 2009. In 2007, she competed at the 9 th New York International Ballet Competition. In 2010, through years of hard work, undeterred discipline, and passion for the craft, Adea’s efforts has been recognized with flying colors with the silver in the US.
